Eleanor Johnson is a British artist whose practice explores instability, excess and the shifting nature of the body. Drawing on Baroque painting, particularly Rubens, alongside mythology, ritual and historical drawing, her work moves between figuration and abstraction, with bodies appearing to merge, dissolve and re-form across the painted surface.
Working primarily in oil, Johnson builds her paintings through layers of glazing, erasure and revision, allowing earlier marks and pentimenti to remain visible. She holds a BA in History of Art from UCL and an MA in Fine Art from City & Guilds of London Art School, was awarded First Prize in Jackson’s Art Prize in 2025, and completed a residency at Palazzo Monti, Brescia, in 2019.
In their own words
“My work centres on instability and excess, the body and shifting flesh, and layered construction where earlier lines remain visible. I’m interested in what happens when the mind feels full or overwhelmed - when thoughts overlap, speed up or start to slip. These states of mental instability sit close to how I think about making images.”
