Hannah Gulland

Hannah Gulland (b. 1997) is a London-based painter originally from Edinburgh whose work explores perception and the shifting relationship between the familiar and the unknown. Moving between abstraction and figuration, her paintings use light, water and atmosphere to distort, reveal and transform what we see.
Working primarily in oil, Gulland develops her paintings from drawings, found imagery and digitally generated references, building, staining and eroding the surface so forms emerge and disappear through layers of colour, texture and light. Her practice considers the power of images and the ways they shape memory, meaning and emotional response.
In their own words
“Through painting I hope to create a sanctuary where time slows and clarity prevails.”
