Margarida Fernandes (b. 1991) is a Portuguese-British artist based between Cornwall and London. Inspired by the Portuguese concept of saudade — a state between yearning, memory and forgetting — her practice explores the passage of time and the fragmentary nature of memory through landscapes, fleeting views and partially obscured spaces.
Working with mixed media and processes including sanding, layering and monoprinting, Fernandes creates patinaed surfaces that reflect on impermanence, resilience and the way memory shifts over time. She completed an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School in 2026, and has exhibited at Wells Art Contemporary, Green & Stone, Chelsea Arts Society and The Marylebone Gallery.
In their own words
“My work explores memory: the act of remembering, the process of forgetting, and the transformations that happen between them. A period of brain fog made me realise that memories are not fixed artefacts preserved behind glass, ready to be retrieved at will. They are more fragile, precious and unstable. Inspired by relics and aged surfaces, I create works that feel intimate and cherished. In doing so, I engage with aspects of the Portuguese concept of ‘saudade’ – often described as the love that remains, or the presence of absence – to emphasise memory as mutable, personal and imperfect.”
