Marilyn Hallam

London|(b) 1947|The Royal  Academy Schools

Marilyn Hallam (b. 1947) is a British painter whose quietly luminous works explore space, memory and the act of looking. Educated at Leeds College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, Hallam developed a distinctive painterly language rooted in domestic interiors, gardens and figures, where translucent layers of colour and recurring motifs such as windows, mirrors and curtains create a sense of psychological stillness and atmosphere.

Hallam has exhibited at APT Gallery, Linden Hall Studio and the Paul Smith Space, with her work also featured in group exhibitions including projects with Blackbird Rook and General Assembly. She lives and works in London, and her paintings are held in private collections in the UK and internationally.

In their own words

“…‘drawing’ was enhanced or exhilarated by colour. I had to learn to trust it, slowly, by introducing colour cutouts to my grounds – anything to move away from naturalism or ‘common sense’ in my depictions. It was important for me to keep the painting open and revealed – no obliteration, covering over or opacity, but keeping some sort of dynamic relationship with the ground colours.”
