Richard Wathen

Suffolk|(b) 1971|Chelsea School of Art

Richard Wathen (b. 1971, London) is a British painter whose work explores ambiguity, identity and the passage of time through psychologically charged figurative compositions. His subjects are often shown absorbed in quiet, uncertain moments, with details of age, gender, place and narrative deliberately left unresolved, allowing space for the viewer’s own interpretation.

Wathen completed an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art in 1996 and now lives and works in Suffolk. Solo exhibitions include MOSTYN, Salon 94, Max Wigram Gallery and L&M Arts, while his work has also been included in group exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth, Blum & Poe, Zwirner & Wirth and LA MOCA.

In their own words

“Figures are drawn from a variety of iconographic sources such as old books, photographic portraits, historical art references, and snapshots. Gender and age are distorted by the use of disquieting details that dislocate the subject in time and place.”
