Lazio, Italy|(b) 1981|Chelsea School of Art
Shaun McDowell (b. 1981, Sussex) is a British painter and curator living and working in Lazio, Italy. Known for his vibrant abstract paintings, his practice is characterised by gestural mark-making, visceral surfaces and a strong use of colour. His work occupies a space between abstraction and figuration, drawing comparisons with artists including Willem de Kooning, Frank Auerbach and Cy Twombly.
McDowell studied at Reigate School of Art before graduating from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2005. A founding member of Lyndhurst Way, he became closely associated with the emerging Peckham art scene and has been represented by Hannah Barry Gallery since 2008. His exhibitions include the Venice Biennale’s Peckham Pavilion, Bold Tendencies and a major solo presentation at Titanic Belfast.
In their own words
“Perhaps the studio is silent, other times classical music sounds out as I get lost and, sometimes, found in passages of paint”
