Sophia Vigne Welsh is an Irish artist based in London whose practice explores space, materiality and the emotional experience of the built environment. Influenced by architecture, urban planning, wabi-sabi, jazz, hip hop and electronic music, she uses improvisation and non-traditional materials to create layered works that challenge conventional approaches to painting and mark making.
Welsh completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2024, following a BFA from the National College of Art & Design, Dublin. She is the recipient of the Clyde Hopkins Award at APT Studios in London, and her work has been commissioned by Guinness, Roe & Co. Whiskey and Hen’s Teeth, with support from the Irish Arts Council.
In their own words
“Play and exploration are central in my approach to making paintings. This is underpinned by a questioning of my instinctual gesture and a material led process. I challenge the limits of mark making and materials to build space and investigate the emotional and physical experience of my environment.”
