XU YANG

London|(b) 1996|Royal College of Art

Xu Yang (b. 1996, Shandong) is a Chinese artist living and working in London. Her multidisciplinary practice explores identity, sexuality and culture, drawing together personal experience with wider historical and social narratives. Influences from Rococo painting, mythology and her Chinese heritage inform a visual language that examines both the richness and complexity of cultural identity.

Yang studied Fine Art Painting at Wimbledon College of Arts before completing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2020. Frequently inserting her own image into her work, she uses self-representation to directly confront the viewer and question established ideas around identity, femininity and societal expectation.

In their own words

“Through dress-up and performance, I explore how female identity is constructed and how we use the materials around us to express ourselves. How we dress and look as a way for us to express our individuality in the society.”
